MEMBERS of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services have expressed satisfaction with the standard and quality of projects executed in Oyo State in the area of basic education.
The Deputy Chairman of the committee, Hon. Usman Zanna (APC, Borno) made the commendation at the end of a two-day inspection of projects in Oyo State on Thursday in Ibadan.
The chairman said that the state under Gov. Seyi Makinde had lived up to its name of a `Pace Setter’, by surpassing all expectations.
Zanna had led a delegation of the committee to the state on an oversight visit to inspect and assess the level of utilization of the Federal Government matching grants released to the state.
The chairman, who said that the grants were meant for the development of basic education infrastructure, said only Oyo State had paid part of counterpart funding in 2021.
He added that the achievements attested to the government’s commitment to the improvement of education in Oyo State.
The Deputy Governor, Mr Rauf Olaniyan, while receiving the delegation, said the government’s drive for education was responsible for the drastic reduction in the number of out-of-school children in the state.
Olaniyan stressed that his administration took education as a major priority, adding that it was one of the main cardinal points of the administration and the government was giving it a priority.
“The state hopes to regain its pace-setting status by ranking first in WAEC examination before the administration runs out in 2023.
“The state government is committed to infrastructural development and capacity building for schools in Oyo State.
“And, will do all as possible including payment of counterpart funds and cordial relationship with the Universal Basic Education Commission to improve the state of education in the state,” Olaniyan said.
Speaking earlier, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB) commended the state government’s commitment to improving the education sector.
He said that the team had inspected the projects embarked upon by the state government in collaboration with UBEC and was satisfied with the level of work done.
The chairman said that the Oyo State government had paid the backlog of counterpart funding to UBEC and had paid all required funding including counterpart funds for 2020/2021 Intervention projects.
Adeniran enjoined the committee to facilitate the release of funds and all other necessary donations due to Oyo State from the Universal Basic Education Commission.
He said that this included the yet-to-be assessed three million dollars advance funds for Better Education Service Delivery, a World Bank Assisted Loan. (NAN)
