House of Representatives felicitates Punch Newspaper on its 50th Anniversary

THE House of Representatives had felicitated  the Punch newspaper on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

The House of Representatives in a statement made available to Realnews on March 1, the the milestones carries special significance because it coincides with the 40th anniversary of the demise of the founder, Chief Olu Aboderin of blessed memory. 

“As a distinguished member of the fourth estate of the realm, the Punch newspaper has played a pivotal role in promoting democracy and development in Nigeria,” the House of Representatives said in a statement signed by 

Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., spokesman, House of Representatives.

The statement noted that founded in 1974 by late Olu Aboderin, the Punch newspaper has remained steadfast in its commitment to journalistic excellence and upholding the principles of press freedom and democracy.

“Over the past five decades, the Punch newspaper has been a strong voice for the voiceless, holding government officials accountable and advocating for good governance”, the statement said.

Part of the statement reads: “The House of Representatives celebrates the legacy and honors the memory of the founder of Punch, Chief Olu Aboderin, and congratulates  the Chairman of the board *Madam Angela Emuwa*, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, *Mr. Adeyeye Joseph*, as well as successive members of the board, management, and staff for their dedication and resilience in keeping the Punch newspaper titles alive.

“Their unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity and the pursuit of truth has earned the Punch newspaper a well-deserved reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected media houses.

*The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D*, lauds the Punch newspaper for its role in advancing press freedom and democracy in Nigeria. He recalls instances where the Punch newspaper stood up for press freedom, such as during the military era when it boldly spoke truth to power and defended the right of the press to operate freely.

“”The Punch newspaper has been a beacon of light in the Nigerian media landscape, championing the cause of press freedom and democracy. We salute the Punch newspaper on its 50th anniversary and wish it many more years of success,” Speaker Abbas said.

“In line with the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives, we remain committed to deepening engagement with the media and the public, and taking necessary legislative action that promotes a free press that does not impugn on the rights of Nigerians.

“The House of Representatives extends its warmest congratulations to the management, staff, and readers of the Punch newspaper on this milestone anniversary.

“We look forward to many more years of partnership in advancing the cause of democracy and development in Nigeria.”
