How I was cheated of N160,000 by carpenter, school proprietress tells court

A Grade1 Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja was told on Wednesday how a 47-year-old carpenter, David John allegedly cheated a school proprietor of N160,000 /

John, who resides in Jiwa area of Gwagwa, Abuja was docked for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The Prosecutor, John Okpa, said the defendant allegedly collected N160,000 from one school proprietress, Mrs Agunloye Wemimo for 20 chairs and tables but failed to supply the items.

Okpa said the defendant allegedly committed offence sometime in 2020.

The Prosecutor said the defendant went to Wemimo’s school, Peter Harvard International School, Kubwa, in 2019 seeking for a furniture job.

Okpa alleged that the defendant was given the job in 2020 and a transfer of N160, 000 was made to him from the school account for 20 chairs and tables.

He said when the defendant was called for the supply, he told Wemimo that his father of over 100 years old was ill and that had consistently became the defendant excuse until he was arrested.

Opka said the defendant was arrested in 2022 when he allegedly went to another school and lied that he had made furniture for Peter Harvard International School, Kubwa as a bait to get the job.

The prosecutor said Wemimo reported the natter to the police in Kubwa. The police stormed the school but could not find the defendant but his son was arrested.

Opka said at the police station, the defendant begged for more time to deliver the chairs and tables and Wemimo obliged

He told the court that the defendant defaulted again and was eventually arrested with the help of the vigilantes in his area.

The Judge, Muhammad Adamu adjourned the matter until Oct.12 for hearing (NAN)
