THE Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has backed the plan by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to take drug cartels out of business.
This is contained in a statement by the HURIWA National Coordinator, Mr Emmanuel Onwubiko on Wednesday in Abuja.
Onwubiko applauded the NDLEA move saying it would also protect the environment from the damages caused by the cultivation and production of illicit drugs.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NDLEA Chairman, retired, Brig.
announced the agency’s alternative development plan when he addressed the UN General Assembly in New York.
The HURIWA boss described the plan as a novel and effective approach to countering the drug problem in Nigeria.
Onwubiko noted that the plan provides specifically designed rural development measures and offers alternatives to those involved in the illicit activities.
According to him, similar alternative measures have been successfully implemented in countries such as Afghanistan, where it reduced the cultivation of opium poppy and improved the livelihoods of farmers.
He praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting the initiative which was meant to address drug-related socioeconomic issues and promote evidence-based drug prevention, treatment and care programmes.
Onwubiko urged Nigerians to support the NDLEA to ensure a drug free society.
“This is one of the key components of a balanced and comprehensive drug control policy, and that it is in line with Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.
He said HURIWA would monitor the implementation of the plan, advocate for its success and ensure respect for human rights and rule of law in the fight against illicit drugs in Nigeria. (NAN)
