…express essatisfaction with agency’s drive to recoup stolen NDDC’S resources

AS the nation’s foremost financial crimes enforcement agency- the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  announced the seizure of large foreign currencies from Nigerians at airports, the prominent civil Rights Advocacy Group-HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has showered unrestrained encomiums on the Abdulrasheed Bawa-led EFCC for working hard to clip the wings of economic saboteurs destroying the value of Nigeria’s national currency through currency speculation.

HURIWA has also encouraged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to increase the tempo of its investigative activities around the massive heists of public funds that keep occurring within the Niger Delta Development Commission just as the Rights group said the anti-graft agency y shouldn’t capitulate to the blackmail of some powerful forces within the National Assembly who want to undermine the clean Financial reforms of the ethically decadent NDDC which is why the crude oil producing communities are criminally underdeveloped due to political thefts of the funds appropriated and released for strategic infrastructural projects in these communities.

HURIWA recalled that the Director of Operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Mr.Abdulkarim Chukkol made the revelation on the Good Morning Nigeria programme on NTA just as he affirmed that money laundering was the reason some Bureau De Change (BDC) operators were recently arrested in Lagos and Abuja.

HURIWA quoted the EFFC’s top official as giving assurance that the commission would continue with its efforts to clean up the foreign exchange sub-sector even as he confirmed that the raid of currency speculators in the parallel market was not indiscriminate but a product of intelligence.

HURIWA quoted the EFCC as saying that it had been deploying agents to airports for over a decade to stop bulk cash movement out of the country and affirmed thus:“Many arrests of cash smugglers have been made and humongous sums in foreign currencies recovered. Some were arrested with excess of $6million, others with $2million. We know these huge sums were not meant to be used in buying goods but stolen monies being laundered. The EFCC secured the forfeiture of the monies to the federal government and prosecuted the culprits.

Reacting, HURIWA’S Onwubiko who expressed delight that the EFCC under the headship of a young Nigerian Abdulrasheed Bawa has by these uncommon feat of making these massive cash SEIZURES from some unscrupulous individuals targeting the devaluation of Naira so they can continue in their dare-devil activities of intrinsically damaging and sabotaging Nigeria’s local economy for their selfish pecuniary gains. The entire members of the organised civil rights advocacy community in Nigeria are thereby commending the Abdulrasheed Bawa-led EFCC for these milestones and expressed optimism that the National currency of Nigeria will not be buffeted by the organised economic terrorism of cash speculators. “We urge the EFCC to sustain the momentum of these intelligence led operations to continue to arrest economic saboteurs.”
