CIVIL rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA), on Tuesday, knocked a group of Christian clergy in South-East Nigeria, the Network Evangelical Bishops of Nigeria (NEBN), for alleging that the March 18 governorship election in Enugu State was manipulated and rigged.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the partisan bishops should stop playing to the gallery and dancing to the tune of their paymasters who want to topple the democratic will of the people of Enugu State who voted massively for Peter Mbah as their choice of a governor in the next four years.

HURIWA said instead of distracting the Governor-Elect with spurious allegations of electoral fraud which are not correct, the so-called bishops should come together and support Mbah to succeed and build on the good legacies of the outgoing Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on March 22 declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Mbah as the winner of the March 18 governorship election in Enugu State. Mbah polled 160,895 votes slightly above his closest rivals — Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP) who scored 157,552 and Uche Nnaji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who got 14,575 votes, amongst others.

However, opposition parties have gone petty and dirty using third-party bishops who have made their bellies their god to spin unfounded allegations that the election that produced Mbah was marred by electoral malpractices.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “Election has come and gone but desperation for power by all means by certain forces propelled by the LP guber candidate in Enugu is exposing them as being just power hungry. The will of the people is done in the victory of Peter Mbah of PDP. There must an end to election and that of Enugu State is over. People should wait for their time.

“The so-called partisan bishops should quit dirty politicking and come together with Peter Mbah in partnership to work for the people and to uplift the status of the state economically.”
