THE Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) applauds the wife of the President, Senator Remi Tinubu, for her kindness and generosity in donating N500 million to 500 families affected by violent conflicts in Plateau State.
HURIWA National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, pointed out that the move is a commendable gesture that demonstrates her compassion and empathy for the victims of the crisis.
Comrade Onwubiko, in appreciating the gesture, urged other wives of public office holders to leverage their nearness to political power to reach out legitimately to the needy, the oppressed, the poor, and the victimized in our society.
He, however, reminded Mrs. Tinubu that charity is not enough to address the root causes of the problems that plague our nation, adding that she should use her influence and position to persuade her husband, President Bola Tinubu, to deliver good governance to Nigerians, for that is the surest panacea to mass hunger, poverty, unemployment, social dislocation, discord, and unsolved conflicts that result in internally displaced persons.
He also urged her to advocate for policies and programs that will promote peace, justice, human rights, development, and security for all Nigerians.
Furthermore, the group appealed to Mrs. Tinubu to use her experience and expertise as a former ranking senator to push for the legalization and institutionalization of the office of the First Lady through legislative frameworks. “This will ensure that the office has a clear mandate, role, and responsibility that is consistent with the constitution and democratic principles.
“It will also enhance the accountability and transparency of the office and its activities. However, we strongly advise that the office of the First Lady should not be funded by public money but by charitable donations from law-abiding corporate bodies and individuals. This will prevent any misuse or abuse of public resources and also encourage more philanthropic initiatives from the private sector. This will be a great legacy that Mrs. Tinubu can leave for Nigeria as the First Lady.
“We believe that the office of the First Lady can be a powerful platform for positive change and social impact if it is properly structured and regulated.
“We draw inspiration from the example of the First Lady of the United States, who has no official role or salary but is supported by a staff of professionals in the Office of the First Lady.
“The First Lady of the United States also engages in various causes and initiatives that reflect her interests and values, such as education, health, women’s rights, military families, and the arts. We hope that Mrs. Tinubu can emulate this model and make a difference in Nigeria as the First Lady.”
