HYPPADEC donates life jackets, cash to boat mishap victims in Niger

THE Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) has donated 200 life jackets and about N2.2 million to the communities affected by recent boat mishap in Lavun and Mokwa Local Government Areas of Niger.
The Managing Director of HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, made the donations during the commission’s sympathy visit to commiserate with the victims and people in Gbara and Lanchikagi areas of the state.
Yelwa explained that the families of the deceased would receive N100,000 each, while 37 of the survivours would be given N30,000 each.
Represented by the Director of Operations, HYPPADEC, Ilyasu Abdullahi Wara, Yelwa called on the state House of Assembly to enact law to enforce the use of life jackets in the state.
He, however, advised the community members to always make use of the life jackets to forestall future reoccurrence.
The District Head of Gbara, Alhaji Mohammed Saba, appreciated the kind gesture from the Federal Government and HYPPADEC for their quick response in providing life jackets and cash donations for the victims and called for more interventions.
A victim, Abubakar Isah Muregi, who lost two of his brothers, applauded HYPPADEC for the provision of the life jackets to safe lives on the waterways against future occurrence.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that 11 persons were confirmed dead with 37 survivours, following a boat mishap while returning from weekly market on the Kaduna River on Friday. (NAN)
