ABUBAKAR Shekau, fugitive Boko Haram leader, has said in a new audio message quoted on social media on Sunday, August 16, that he was still alive and remained leader of the insurgence.

“Infidel media published that I’m dead, or sick and can’t speak, this is an utter lie.” Rita Katz, director of Site Intelligence posted on her social media site, quoting Shekau as saying to Abubakar Baghaddi, ISIS leader, adding: “If this was true how is that I can speak now?”

However, the authenticity of the audio message was yet to be independently verified.

Social media feed of jihad monitoring site, Site Intelligence quoted a new audio message released from Shekau denying reports that he was unable to serve as leader.

There have been several claims by Nigeria’s military that Shekau was killed in past few years, but he has kept popping up in new videos.

Last week, President Idriss Deby of Chad, claimed that the Boko Haram leader was wounded and had been replaced as leader by one Mahamoud Daoud. Deby alleged that Shekau went to Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, after he was wounded.

The Chadian president, according to Reuters, news agency, said the new Boko Haram leader, whom little is known about, was open to the idea of dialogue with the Nigerian government.
