The fourth anniversary lecture of Realnews Magazine and Publications Limited which holds in Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, on Thursday, November 17, is parading a galaxy of top diplomats, administrators and security personnel. Chairing this year’s event is Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State.

Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the United Nations’ Secretary General for West Africa and Sahel, and first former president of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is the guest lecturer. The theme of this year’s lecture is: “Security and National Development in A Plural Democratic Society.” To help dissect the lecture note and contribute to the burning issue are eminently qualified personnel such as Boboye Oyeyemi, corps marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC; Alex Cummings, presidential hopeful, Liberia, and Ibrahim Idris, inspector general of Police, Nigeria Police Force, NPF. The lecturer and all the panellists have confirmed their attendance at the event.

The management of Realnews Magazine and Publications Limited is focusing on the security this year because of the seemingly intractable security issues across the country in recent times. For instance, the latest security threats manifest in the form of Boko Haram insurgency, separatist Independent People of Biafra, Niger Delta militancy and the farmers/herdsmen brouhaha and other sundry criminalities have been a serious cause for concern.

A press statement signed by Maureen Chigbo, publisher/editor of Realnews, stated that as Nigeria seeks its place in a modern interconnected global community, it was becoming evident that security would be one of the major challenges facing, especially considering the fact that it was predicted that the nation could disintegrate in 2015. Although this has failed to happen, the social dynamics that could make the prediction come true are still very much around. With this in mind, one can see that security is one of the factors to focus on in our dream for nationhood.

Besides, Chigbo pointed to the fact that security is an essential ingredient for the national growth, encourage investments and bring about economic prosperity of the country as there would greater employment, poverty reduction, social progress and peace, tranquillity and stability. “In our quest to create a nation state called Nigeria, we believe that security is the most important issue to address in 2016 and this should be done against the background of national development needs in the contest of a plural and democratic society,” Chigbo said.
