Ibori’s Loot is Still in United Kingdom – UK Envoy
BREAKING NEWS, Politics
–
THE looted funds from James Ibori, former Delta Stat governor, are still in Britain. Paul Arkwright, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, who disclosed this in an interview with Punch Newspaper, said the confiscated funds would be returned to the country in accordance with the United Nations laws.
Arkwright said the United Kingdom would ensure that assets seized, confiscated or forfeited that fall within Article 57 United Nations Convention Against Corruption 2005 were returned to the country from which they had been stolen. According to Arkwright, none of the money confiscated from Ibori had yet been returned, adding that the confiscation hearing would take place later this year. “Assets have been forfeited and confiscated from linked trials and we are, through the Home Office, working on the modality of their return. We are working with Nigerian authorities to deliver an effective mechanism for the return of stolen funds and assets to Nigeria,” he said.
On Tuesday, April 17, 2012, Ibori was sentenced to 13 years by Southwark Crown Court for stealing $250 million from the Nigerian public purse. His properties were confiscated and among those possessions confiscated were, a house in Hampstead, north London, for £2.2m, a property in Shaftesbury, Dorset, for £311,000, a £3.2m mansion in Sandton, near Johannesburg, South Africa, a fleet of armoured Range Rovers valued at £600,000, a £120,000 Bentley Continental GT and a Mercedes-Benz Maybach 62 bought for €407,000 cash, that was shipped direct to his mansion in South Africa.
