THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has commended Grant Thornton Nigeria for the quality of professional services rendered to promote an enabling and sustainable business environment.

Malam Tijjani Isa, President, ICAN, made the commendation in a statement signed by Mrs Merrilyn Okeleke, Senior Manager, Public Relations and Communications, on Tuesday.

Isa made the commendation during a courtesy visit to the firm in Lagos.

He said the commendation was due to the company’s focus on sustainability as a practice and service, which was in line with the focus of the Institute to engender a better business environment.

Isa charged members of the institute to become more of value officers than financial officers as a duty to the public for preservation of the planet alongside business profitability.

The ICAN president noted that the institute was on the advocacy drive for sustainability because of its belief that economic growth and planet safety can exist simultaneously.

“We are convinced that accountants and finance professionals have vital roles to play in achieving sustainable and inclusive economic recovery.

“Sustainability; central to the activities of Grant Thornton International Ltd. has guided your actions and decisions, and also lit your path toward championing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) leadership.

“This purpose has made business more personal and helps builds trust so that every result clearly reflects this objective,” he said.

In her response, the Managing Partner, Grant Thornton Nigeria, Dr Ngozi Ogwo, reiterated that over the last decade, sustainability had evolved from an environmentally focused discipline to being a key driver of business strategy.

Ogwo noted that the pace of this evolution had accelerated with the post-pandemic related issues and the need for a comprehensive fiscal recovery.

She stated that the company was one of the leading professional services firms that had pivoted their traditional service offerings to support clients with these new and emerging challenges.

Ogwo noted that the company was seen as the market leader in sustainability advisory, sustainability reporting amongst others.

“Globally, over the last few years, a good number of organisations across all sectors, and in all jurisdictions, have adapted to changes in the business environment.

“This is to accommodate practices that encourage and promote sustainability and preservation of the earth, while still achieving profitability,” she said.(NAN)
