THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) on Thursday urged companies and governments to leverage on technology in revenue generation and maximizing financial profitability.

The ICAN President, Mr Razak Jaiyeola, gave the advice at a news briefing in Lagos on its forthcoming maiden Annual Accountants Technology Summit tagged ‘’Accountek’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day summit will hold from April 29 to April 30 at Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

It is expected to feature some of the most experienced and innovative business and technology technocrats in Nigeria and Africa.

Jaiyeola said that technology ensured undeniable transformation across all sectors, particularly the public sector.

He said that the summit was aimed at updating its members with the various business opportunities in emerging financial technologies and take advantage thereof.

“In this digital age, the role of accountants as custodians of data, information, finance and investment oracles has not changed, but the methods of achieving the roles has changed and will continue to change.
“This implies that accountants must not just appreciate technology, but be very versed in deploying different forms of technology for business survival and growth.
“The summit will be an avenue for accountants and other business professionals to understand the opportunities that exist in the area of technology for their profession and business,” Jaiyeola said.
The ICAN President urged participants to take advantage of the platform of interaction between members and manufacturers/vendors of these technologies during the summit.

According to him, the Institute no longer produced analogue accountants but digital accountants skilled at addressing issues bordering on strategic planning, creative thinking and business development.

“Accountants need to be heavily information technology skilled to move with the current pace of accounting practices so we are ensuring that we are at par with acceptable accounting standards worldwide,” he said.
Speaking on forensic investigation in accounting, Jaiyeola reiterated the Institute’s position to defend the standard of account and audit practice in the country. (NAN)
