NO fewer than 1,620 Volunteer Hygiene Promoters, VHPs, have been trained in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, LGA, of Anambra during a Community Hygiene Improvement Plans, CHIPs.
The training which was aimed at inculcating in the participants the habit of effective hand washing and sensitisation on dangers of open defecation took place at Iruezeide Alor.
The chairman, VHPs Somke commended the volunteer workers for devoting their time to helping humanity.
The programme, being sponsored by the European Union, EU, and UNICEF in conjunction with the Federal, State and Local Government took effect in 2006 with Anambra selected again in 2012 for prompt payment of counterpart funding.
The training was facilitated by Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, Unit staff of Idemili South LGA and Civil Society Organisations with officers from Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, Awka, monitoring the exercise.
It was expected that two VHPs each should work in clusters, made up of 20 households in their various communities.
The administrative officer, WASH Unit, Idemili South LGA, Ngozi Akalugo, said that being a VHP would not affect one’s means of livelihood since it was something performed at their convenience.
Akalugo explained that the fact that incidence of hygiene-related diseases would be reduced in communities was also a huge reward for them.
Onyinye Ajagwu, secretary, VHPs, Iruezeide Alor, expressed her gratitude for the construction of the Tippy tap, a local hand-washing facility which she learnt during the training.
