THE International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has expressed shock at the passing of its former President, Dr Kanayo Nwanze.
In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, IFAD described Nwanze as a visionary leader and a passionate advocate for rural communities.
It stated that the former IFAD president dedicated his life to eradicating poverty and hunger in rural areas across many developing countries.
The organisation noted that, during his tenure as IFAD President from 2009 to 2017, Nwanze successfully expanded IFAD’s overall portfolio and more than doubled its investments in Africa.
IFAD extended its condolences to his loved ones and to those who had the privilege of working with him.
“Nwanze’s energy and commitment inspired us all, and his contributions to IFAD and the world were outstanding.
“He was awarded the inaugural Africa Food Prize in September 2016 for his leadership at IFAD and his advocacy for Africa’s smallholder farmers, food security, and poverty alleviation.
“His passion for rural transformation as a driver of sustainable development was lifelong,” the statement read.
According to IFAD, as a young researcher, Nwanze pioneered an innovative pest control approach using wasps to combat the devastating African mealybug, an initiative later credited with saving an estimated 20 million lives in Africa.
“The approach continues to be used successfully in Asia and elsewhere,” it said.
The statement further noted that Nwanze served as Special Goodwill Ambassador on Zero Hunger for Africa and on the boards of organisations such as the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
“His memory and legacy will continue to inspire us all as we carry on the fight against poverty and hunger,” IFAD said. (NAN)
