ODION Ighalo, Nigerian striker playing for Watford in England, has won the coveted English Premier League player of the month award. In winning the award, Ighalo had stiff competition from Mesut Ozil of Arsenal and Dele Alli of Tottenham, to finally win his first Premier League player of the month award.

The Nigerian, who had been nominated repeatedly in the past, finally won as he emerged as the best player in England’s top flight league for the month of December 2015.

It was a double celebration for Watford as Quique Sanchez Flores, its manager, won the Premier League manager category for leading the Hornets to important wins in the period under review.

Flores’ wards amassed 10 points from five fixtures to finish the calendar year on a promising level and having recorded victories over Norwich, Sunderland and Liverpool.

Ighalo scored five goals in the month, including two in the Vicarage Road win over Liverpool, to take his tally for the season to 13, tied for third in the Premier League behind Romelu Lukaku of Everton and Jamie Vardy of Leicester City.

Ighalo now joins the exclusive list of Nigerian players such as Osaze Odemwingie, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Jay Jay Okocha who at different times had been voted best player of the month in the EPL.
