THE Chairman of Ikole Local Government Area in Ekiti, Mr Bayo Omojola, has decried the practice of open defecation and enjoined residents to stop polluting the environment.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikole-Ekiti on Wednesday,  Omojola said that the consequences of open defecation were many, including outbreak of infectious diseases.

Omojola advised landlords to provide toilets in their properties in order to eliminate open defecation and proper hygiene by the tenants.

The chairman also appeal to parents not to allow their children to defecate in front of their houses, drains, or roadside bushes within the community.

“I want to advise residents to stop defecating in the open to prevent outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and other dangerous diseases that emanate from faeces exposed in the open.

“The landlords are being encouraged to build toilets for their tenants, but some are yet to comply with this directive.

“We are fighting a war against open defecation for the benefit of ourselves, children, and residents in our communities, and we will continue till everybody cultivates good hygienic culture,” he said.

Omojola assured that his administration would provide necessary facilities and materials  for quality health service delivery in health centres in the communities.
