AS part of efforts to develop badminton from the grassroots, Ikoyi Club 1938 sponsored participants to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for a two-day national teens coaching programme, which introduced the children to the basics of the sport.
As part of the training, the children featured in a friendly tournament between Ikoyi Club and Uyo Badminton Club, which the Lagos club won 9-0.
The clinic, facilitated by top badminton players in the country, was also organised to help stimulate the interest of children in the sport.
Chairman, Badminton Section, Ikoyi Club 1938, Jetson Nwankwo, who led the team to Uyo, commended the organisers of the programme for their efforts in developing the sport at the grassroots level.
He noted that attending the programme was part of Ikoyi Club’s efforts to contribute to the growth of the racket sport at the grassroots level in Nigeria.
Nwankwo said with constant and cautious efforts, programmes like the children’s course would raise worthy ambassadors in different age grade tournaments in the future.
“We always associate with any project that will bring good tidings to badminton in Nigeria. Just last month, we organised a kiddies clinic at the club geared towards catching them young,” he said.
Nwankwo disclosed that at the end of the programme in Akwa Ibom, Ikoyi Club donated badminton equipment and kits to the Uyo Badminton Club.
