GOVERNOR Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, has flagged off the construction of four additional roads in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state, bringing the total number of roads currently being undertaken by his administration in Aba in the last seven months to 29.

The roads flagged off by Ikpeazu include the Ohazu, Ozuomba and Ibere roads linking the Port Harcourt road as well as the Umuola-Umuokahia road in Obingwa LGA.

Speaking at the event the governor said that he was concerned about the plight of the residents of the area and described the roads as strategic in the economic development of Aba. ”It is unfortunate that these people still wade through flood even in dry season,” he said.

According to the governor, the state government was constrained to commence the rehabilitation of the Obohia road due to some encumbrances on it following the award of the contract for the road by the NDDC to a contractor and stated government’s readiness to reconstruct the road if the contractor was not willing to do it.

To underscore his administration’s seriousness in delivering the Ozuomba and Ohazu road projects on record time, Ikpeazu said that two contractors had been deployed on the roads and called on those with attachments that might stall the progress of work on the roads to remove them without delay.

According to him, cement pavement technology would be adopted in the construction of the roads while the roads would come with drainage and street lights to extend business hours and promised to give the people of the area the best.

The governor decried the neglect of the Umuola–Umuokohia road by successive governments and assured them that his government would correct the situation.

Earlier in his speech, Eziuche Ubani, commissioner for Works in the state, noted that barely one week after the governor visited the road, he decided to flag off the construction to give the people a sense of belonging and urged the people to assist the government to do more by paying their taxes.

In their separate speeches residents of the affected roads community leaders expressed gratitude to the governor for coming to their aid after many years of neglect and pledged their support to his administration.
