THE International Labour Organisation (ILO) has called on World Leaders to ensure a better and peaceful world by embracing decent work, social justice and equality for all.
The ILO Director-General, Mr Guy Ryder made the call during an opening remark at the World of Work Summit, 107th International Labour Conference (ILC) on Thursday in Geneva Switzerland.
The theme of the summit was “Employment and Decent work for Peace and Resilience.”
Ryder said it was unfortunate that more countries were witnessing incidences of conflicts and violent that poses potential threat to global peace and survival.
According to him, leaders and everybody has a stake in securing peace and resilience, which is currently deepened by persistent crisis, which endangers all.
“There are echoes of these in the ILO constitution which reminds us that poverty anywhere can constitute danger to prosperity everywhere.
“The daily plea which the world body hear time and again is for bread, jobs, freedom and dignity, education for the children and those who are displaced wants to go back home to safety, to jobs and security.
“Our world is suffering not only from heightened tension, but also multiple grave and intractable conflicts as well as natural disasters.
“These are terrible events inflicting very terrible sufferings, which destroy lives and communities and are threatening our collective stability. That is why the ILO is and must be present in such situation,” he said.
He added that we are here today because of the demand of hundreds of men and women living in fragile and affected countries.
The ILO boss said the plea that is heard time and again was for bread, jobs, freedom and dignity, education for the children and the displaced, jobs and security.
“We all have a stake in securing peace and resilience as deepened persistent crisis endangers all.
There are echoes of these in the ILO constitution, which reminds us that poverty anywhere can constitute danger to prosperity everywhere.
“Yet, we are seeing the emergence of the appearance of new global consensus.
“The building and sustaining peace require to addressing the root courses of conflict and crisis, which lies in conditions of poverty and disillusion, inequality and discrimination and violation of human rights,” he said.
Ryder noted that over the years, the ILO has put its expertise and knowledge at the service of the most vulnerable population in fragile and conflict affected countries and those recovering from disaster.
He added that the ILO has done so through approaches derived directly from the founding principles and values of the organisation.
According to him, there is need for coherence and integrated strategies to prevent and deal with crisis, to facilitate post conflict recovery and for peace and resilience and decent work.
Also, President of Ireland, Michael Higgins called for an approach to work that could meet the contemporary demands of social justice.
Higgins said that there was need, in ever-changing conditions, to craft the experience of work within a sustainable, ethical global citizenship.
He also stressed the need to combat discrimination and the recognition of human rights in bringing it to fruition.
Higgins called on world leaders to expand their economic opportunities, ensuring the recognition of fundamental social and economic rights.
He also advocated for advancement and achievement of decent work, and the facilitation of social dialogue between workers. (NAN)
