THE Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr. Muhammad Babandede, has urged newly decorated senior officers of the service to exhibit a high sense of professionalism and commitment to duty.
Babandede said this during the virtual decoration of senior officers of the service on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that officers should carry out their duty in line with the mandate of the service especially in furtherance of the Federal Government policy on ease of doing business.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 100 senior officers were promoted by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Board (CDCFIB) vide a letter referenced, CDCFIB/NIS/DTS/CORR/503/138.
The number of junior officers who were also promoted within the same period were 3,548 and 118 conversions.
Babandede directed that all other officers promoted be decorated at the Zonal and Command levels due to COVID-19 protocols given by the Federal Government in keeping social distancing.
“I am not looking for a certificate. I am looking for professionalism in this service. I want you to be a professional immigration officer, a professional visa issuer, and a professional technician who can repair our equipment.
“I encourage you all to have a skill rather than rushing to get a certificate.
“A lot of people are rushing to get a certificate but this cannot help Nigeria, what will help Nigeria is a skill. And I hope we will encourage our officers to do that, ” he said.
Babandede said that the service was trying its best to be gender-balanced, adding that the service would continue to ensure that it practiced gender balancing.
“A total of 29 Comptroller of Immigration (CIS) to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) and a total of 71 Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCI) to the rank of Comptroller of Immigration (CIS) were promoted.
“Out of the 29 ACGs, we have 7 females and out of the 71 CIS, we have 14 females. We are still trying our best to ensure gender equality in our service, ” he said.
Babandede urged senior officers decorated to be up and doing, adding that promotion was not by chance but hard work.
“To whom much is given, they say much is expected. But I am expecting too much from you because of COVID -19 which means you have more work to do.
“I urge you that wherever you are posted, stay there and do your work. The E-registration System of immigration has almost been completed, so be prepared, ” he said.
On his part, Commissioner, CDCFIB, Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Bassey (Rtd.), advised the newly promoted officers to justify the promotion by working harder and adding value to the service.
“Many are called, few are chosen. The few of you that have been chosen are expected to perform well. There is always something to look up to at any point in time. Do not relax. You must justify this deserved position.
“For those who were not promoted should never feel disappointed. It is not the end of time. Your chance to be promoted will surely come.
“The promotion for 2020 will be done this year by God’s grace, so do not be worried, ” he said.
Assistant Comptroller General, (ACG) Mrs Doris Braimah, on behalf of the decorated senior officers, said that promotion came from God and to Him alone be all the glory.
Braimah said that promotion came with more work and responsibility, adding that as the newly decorated officers assumed their new roles, they would do their best to carry out their duties.
“On that note, we promise to do all that is within our powers to uphold the value of the NIS. We shall perform our task diligently and promise not to let the service down,” she said. (NAN)
