INDIA has won a United Nations award for its initiative to control and prevent hypertension under the government’s National Health Mission, officials said on Thursday.
The India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI) is a large-scale hypertension intervention project which was recognized for its work within India’s existing primary healthcare system.
The 2022 UN Interagency Task Force and WHO Special Programme on Primary Health Care Award were granted to India for IHCI at a UN General Assembly side event held in New York on Wednesday.
India’s federal Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in a statement said “this highly impactful initiative has received applause from the UN. We are committed to building a healthy and fit India.’’
According to officials, IHCI was launched in November 2017 and expanded across many states of the South Asian country.
Under the initiative, more than 3.4 million people with hypertension are taking treatment in government-run health facilities. (Xinhua/NAN)
