India’s election body recommends disqualification of state’s head of gov’t

THE Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday recommended the disqualification of Jharkhand Chief Minister (CM) Hemant Soren after allegations of corruption were leveled against him.
The local media reports that Soren belongs to the political party “Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)”, and runs a coalition government in the state.
Following the latest political development, he summoned all the JMM lawmakers to state capital Ranchi for holding a closed-door meeting and chalk out the further course of action.
Soren has been allegedly found involved in awarding mining contracts to himself and those close to him while being the chief minister of Jharkhand, thus violating office of profit provisions.
The state’s former chief minister Raghubar Das, who belongs to the current opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had complained to the ECI against Soren, alleging violation of office of profit provisions while awarding mining contracts.
Following the allegations, the ECI heard CM Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren and concluded the hearing on Aug. 18.
According to sources, the ECI made the recommendation to State Governor Ramesh Bais, who had sought the election body’s opinion after receiving a complaint from the BJP’s Raghubar Das.
Meanwhile, the chief minister’s office said that it has not received any official communication regarding the chief minister’s disqualification.
After the ECI’s recommendation, the state’s governor is expected to take a decision about Soren’s disqualification. (Xinhua/NAN)
