THE United States is poised to lift its 80-year-old ban on hemp and things are finally moving as the Senate has decided to conference on the historic 2018 Farm Bill to work out disparities between the Senate and the House’s versions of the bill.
The Senate’s version of the Farm Bill contains the Hemp Farming Act which would remove industrial hemp from the federal government’s schedule of controlled substances, while the House version is silent on hemp.
Hemp Farming Act of 2018 is sponsored by Leader McConnell and co-sponsored by a bipartisan coalition of more than two-dozen senators, including Chuck Schumer, Senate minority leader. McConnell, who introduced the Hemp Farming Act, put himself on the conference committee; his inclusion on the committee is giving advocates and industry leaders hope that hemp legalisation could happen as soon as Labour Day.
The largest legal commercial multi-purpose industrial hemp processing facility in North America is run by Hemp, Inc. The company harvested 550 acres of hemp last year, which was processed and manufactured at Hemp, Inc.’s 85,000 square foot facility in Spring Hope, North Carolina. The company announced today that its facility hit its one year anniversary of being operational as the company continues to expand its cultivation and processing footprint nationwide. The multipurpose facility began operations Aug. 2, 2017.
McConnell has a history of pushing for pro hemp legislation, including the inclusion of hemp in the 2014 Farm Bill and co-sponsoring the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2015.
Thanks to some of McConnell’s previous efforts, it is already legal to grow industrial hemp for research purposes.
