INEC appeals to traditional leaders on collections of PVCs, peaceful elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appealed to traditional rulers to prevail on their subjects to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).
Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Gombe state, made the call on Wednesday in Gombe during an interactive session with traditional rulers.
He said that the traditional rulers had vital roles to play toward ensuring free, fair, credible and peaceful elections in their respective domain.
According to him, the commission had registered a total of 256,189 voters, inter and intra transferred of 6,955 and replacement of 24,868 in the state.
He said the commission had recorded success in the area of mobilisation through the unflinching support of the traditional rulers, hence the need for them to double their effort for more success.
The REC said the Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), had worked out modalities to ensure deployment of personnel for the elections in the state.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr Muhammad Mukaddas, the state Commissioner of Police , assured that his command was prepared to ensure the safety of lives and property during the elections.
He called on the traditional rulers to alert the police on any security issue to enable them respond to the problem.
In their remarks, the traditional rulers expressed their happiness over the success recorded so far by INEC, just as they commended the state government for addressing some of the challenges associated with security, especially with regards to thuggery.
Alhaji Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar, Emir of Gombe and Chairman, Council of Traditional Rulers, represented by Lamido Abubakar, assured of their full support.
The Emir advised the commission to ensure strict restrictions of movement during the elections. (NAN)
