THE Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has assured stakeholders of the Commission’s readiness for the Ondo State Governorship election, scheduled for November 16, 2024.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, Professor Yakubu emphasized INEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
INEC has implemented various electoral activities, including voter registration and distribution of Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVCs. The Commission has uploaded detailed information on collected and uncollected PVCs for each of the 3,933 polling units in Ondo State.
Additionally, INEC has accredited 111 domestic and international organizations, deploying 3,554 observers and over 100 media organizations with 700 personnel.
Professor Yakubu stressed the importance of security during the election, ensuring personal safety and protection for observers, media, and citizens. The Inspector-General of Police will address security preparations and INEC has warned staff of the consequences for dereliction of duty.
INEC conducted a successful mock accreditation in 12 polling units, testing its deployment of technology to safeguard the election’s credibility. The commission will deploy BVAS machines for voter accreditation and result upload to the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal.
Professor Yakubu urged political parties to restrain their supporters from disruptive behavior and use INEC-issued accreditation tags.
He also invited stakeholders to the Peace Accord signing ceremony on November 8, 2024, presided over by General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
With just eight days to the election, INEC reassures stakeholders of its preparedness to conduct a successful and peaceful election.
