CONTRARY to social media report, Mahmood Yakubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, chairman, while answering question in Abuja, on Tuesday, February 19, said no commissioner had been invited or picked by the Department of State Services, DSS, as reported. “As I am talking to you here now, no official of INEC has been invited by the DSS,” he emphasised.

The rumour in the media had suggested that the DSS invited Okechukwu Ibeanu, the national commissioner of the INEC in charge of logistics. TheCable later reported that the invitation to Ibeanu to report to the DSS office in Abuja at 2pm on Tuesday was dropped.

TheCable also in its unconfirmed report said that the DSS also invited Chidi Nwafor, the director of ICT; Ken Ukeagu, director of procurement; Osaze Uzzi, director of voter education and publicity; and Bimbo Oladunjoye, the assistant director of ICT.

“TheCable could not confirm why DSS rescinded its decision but sources hinted that some prominent Nigerians intervened because of the “timing”. This invitation was initially believed to be related to the fiasco that led to the postponement of the general election by one week,” the online medium said.
