INEC tasks media on mobilisation for CVR in Edo, Ondo
Politics
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the support of media toward mobilising prospective registrants for the Continuous Voters Registration (CRV) in Edo and Ondo States.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this at a quarterly stakeholders meeting with the media executives in Abuja on Wednesday.
Yakubu urged the media to sensitise prospective registrants on the need to register on time.
He also urged media organisations to help mobilise registered voters to collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), during the exercise taking place simultaneously in the two states.
He urged the media to monitor campaigns of political parties in Edo which commenced on Wednesday April 24 and end at midnight on Thursday, Sept. 19 which is 24 hours before the election date.
“We look forward reading your monitoring reports of the campaigns as some of you have done in the past.
“As we move closer to Election Day in Edo, it is also imperative to request media organisations to submit applications for accreditation to report on the election in earnest along with the required documentation for individual journalists and support staff.
“Doing so will enable the Commission to produce and deliver the identity cards for journalists covering the election in good time.
“The Commission will not entertain requests outside the deadline for the receipt of applications from interested media organisations or process requests that do not meet the criteria for accreditation,’’ he said.
In his remarks, the President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Chris Isiguzo, pledged that the media would work with INEC to ensure that the election was successful.
Isiguzo, represented by the NUJ National Secretary, Mr Achike Chude, assured of the media support in carrying out its responsibility in the two states. (NAN)
