DR Abdullahi Kabiru of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, has advised women to promptly treat infections to avoid infertility issues.

He gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.

He said that although infertility has become a public healthcare concern, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDs) and other infections are also associated with the scourge.

According to him, infections can cause blockage of the fallopian tube in the female reproductive organ.

He added that “pelvic Inflammatory disease can also cause tube blockage in women; this can lead to infertility too.

“Although tubal surgery can be conducted as treatment, the procedure is costly and tedious.”

He listed other causes of infertility in men and women to include unhealthy lifestyles and obesity.

He said “in cases of infertility, men contribute 30 per cent, while women contribute 30 per cent,
with joint problems causing 30 per cent as 10 per cent are due to unexplained causes.”

Kabiru also said that “infertility is a curable ailment, hence couples should visit healthcare facilities together for proper treatment.

“The good news is that couples can have their babies using various professional methods such as the In Vetro Fertilisation (IVF).”

He, therefore, advised couples to consult medical experts “and shun all forms of unknown herbal medications for infertility so as to avoid further complications.” (NAN)
