A GROUP, Coalition for Better and Brighter Nigeria (CBBN), has said that State Police will address the myriad of security challenges currently facing the nation.

Prophet Isa El-buba, Convener of the group, said this in a press conference on Wednesday in Jos.

El-buba decried the spate of unprovoked killings, destruction of farmlands and other properties in Plateau, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Benue, Taraba states, among others

The convener, particularly condemned the recent killings in Mangu, Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau, insisting that state police would address the menace.

”In the last four months, over a thousand persons, mostly women and children, have been massacred by suspected terrorists in communities in Mangu, Barkin Ladi and Riyom.

”Houses were burnt, including foodstuff, food barns and crops on farmlands.

”We strongly condemn this barbaric, despicable and heart wrenching killings and destruction of lives and property in these communities.

”Government must therefore work to decentralise policing, because the time for security sector reform in Nigeria is long overdue; the time for state police is now,”he said.

El-buba, who called on the security agencies to intensify efforts in securing lives and property in communities, called on residents in troubled areas to step up their early warning and early response mechanisms.

”Because security is everyone’s responsibility, we call on communities to remain sensitive and share timely actionable intelligence with relevant authorities.

”Stakeholders must work together to strengthen coordination of early warning and early response systems in communities.

”While we call on the security agencies to redouble their efforts in tackling the security challenges in the nation, we call on citizens to defend themselves within the context of the law in the face of these unprovoked attacks,”he said.

The convener also called on National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant government agencies to provide relief materials to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), scattered all over the state.

He said that his group would collaborate with spirited individuals and groups to create awareness and provide support to affected communities in the state. (NAN)
