Institute advocates technical education as remedy for unemployment

AN Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship Development, ‘Leadstar Interversity’ has called on the Kaduna State Government to inculcate technical, vocational education and training to address unemployment among the youth.

President of the Institute, Dr Godwin Amama, made the call during the 2024 Youth Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Summit and World Youth Skills Day celebration held at Kad-ICT hub, Kaduna.

The summit had the theme ” Collaborative Financing for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Kaduna State “.

Amama stated that the institute was proffering inclusive sustainable solutions to the challenges of youth unemployment by equipping youth with vital knowledge and expertise to succeed in the economic environment.

” We want to lunch a youth development fund, targeted at empowering 12,000 youth within three to four years through Accelerated Small- Scale Entrepreneurship and Trade-Skills (ASSETS).

“Youth would be trained in agriculture, building, digital skills, renewable energy,food processing , textile and fashion, recycling waste to wealth,wood and metal trade among others,”he said.

While speaking, the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, said that the board had introduce the National Skills Qualification Framework(NSQF) and National Occupational Standard (NOS)

Bugaje, who was represented by the Head, Technical Division of the board, Bashir Datti, stated that the NSQF and NOS were designed to enhance skills development, recognition and employability.

Similarly, the Director, Enterprenuership Research and Development Center (ERDC) ,Kaduna State University stated that the importance of skills in today’s world cannot be overemphasized .

He said it was not wise for youth to depend on the theories they learned in the university urging them to learn a skill that would earn them daily income.

“If you are waiting for a job that will pay you monthly,then you are not dreaming of comfort because you have to wait till month end before you get money unlike skills that give you daily income,”he said.

Meanwhile, the Relationship Manager, Lotus Bank, Musa Adamu, stated that the bank would give 10 slots for agency banking where the beneficiaries would get a POS machine at a discounted price of N15,000.

He added that additional five people would get a free ATM card when they open an account with the bank.(NAN)
