THE Nigerian Institution of Electrical Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Ibadan Chapter, has stepped up efforts to end quackery in Nigeria’s electrical engineering sector.
The chairman, NIEEE, Ibadan Chapter, Mr Babatunde Ogunpaimo, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesday in Ibadan, called for collective efforts in ending the menace.
Ogunpaimo said that the activities among quacks in the profession had led to destruction of lives, properties and fire accidents in many homes.
He said that the current economic situation in the country had brought many quacks into the electrical profession, a challenge that many other sectors were also facing.
He noted that NIEEE, as a professional body seeks to promote professional competence and excellence among its members, and would not fold its arms and watch the situation to continue.
According to him, the Ibadan Chapter of NIEEE, has embarked on continuous sensitisation of its members, as well as the public, through seminars, workshops in the fight against quackery in Nigeria.
He, however, said in spite of the stringent measures the institution was taking to sanitise the sector, students of electrical engineering were being given the opportunity to practice, and were also registered as student members.
“NIEEE, in collaboration with higher institutions of learning allows electrical engineering students to join the body as student members for early stage carrier mentorship.
“NIEEE through its monitoring committee, will continue to work with relevant agencies, media and other stakeholders to put an end to quackery in the electrical profession.
“We are taking necessary measures to eliminate sharp practices, and we are intensifying efforts in capacity building of our members.
“We also urge Nigerians to stop patronising non-professionals for electrical projects because of dangers associated with bad electrical installations and the use of substandard electrical materials.
Ogunpaimo added that the NIEEE would not be deterred in this fight, including taking necessary disciplinary measures against any of its members engaging in unprofessional or unethical practices. (NAN)
