THE Adamawa Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), have trained 50 child protection actors in the state.
Speaking at the training in Yola on Thursday, Mr Samuel Sesay, UNICEF’s Child Protection Manager, said the training was about managing children affected by conflicts.
“In Adamawa, there are some local government areas affected by the Boko Haram crisis like Michika, Mubi, and Madagali.
“So, these children need to be protected because we have those who were abducted and when they are released, they need to go back home.
“These children need to go back to school, get livelihoods and psycho-social support, among other services,” Sesay said.
He said the participants were expected to provide psycho-social support, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) support, response and prevention and management support for the children.
Mrs Neido Kofulto, Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs, thanked UNICEF for its sustained support especially on child protection.
She said, “Adamawa is directly affected by the Boko Haram emergency crisis in the region, which resulted in thousands of people displaced, loss of lives, property destroyed and children were orphaned.
“Some were separated from their respective families while some were abducted by the insurgents, Boko Haram members.”
According to her, the ministry, with UNICEF support, had implemented numerous child protection activities in the state, which include skills acquisition and socio-economic reintegration.
Others were: Provision of Psycho-social support to children in camps and host communities, community engagement as well as case management.
Hajiya Aisha Yakubu, one of the participants, said that the training was full of necessary insights for them.
She said that it would enable them to provide effective services with respect to child protection using all the necessary guidelines (NAN)
