International Archives Day: Corruption and Security Challenges

THE Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde at this year’s International Archives Day has stated that his administration is determined to harness the hospitality potentials of the state, in order to preserve the traditional and cultural artefacts and records that tell the story of the people, for the benefit of future generations at the event organized by Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau, LASRAB.
He further declared that the state will collaborate with the Federal Government in re-developing the National Museum, Onikan, as well as, leverage on the proximity of Freedom Park to generate a culture hub that would impact positively on the tourism potentials of the New Lagos that will be running a 24/7 economy.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Folarin Adeyemi in his address said that archive is the conscience of every society just as individuals, so also nations and organisations must have record keeping mechanisms.
According to Adeyemi, these mechanisms are very instructive particularly now that the nation has a leadership that is committed to fight corruption, urging further that without archival recall there will be no perspective on which to place planning, prevents errors, show proofs and more importantly transfer knowledge.
Femi Falana, lead speaker commended the state government for the establishment of LASRAB, setting the pace for other states of the federation and also reiterating the importance of record keeping, retrieval of document, security of document and updating of the records.
He, however applauded the EFCC for securing 140 convictions within a year, this he said was achievable through their standard data base.
Other discussants are, Sam omatseye, chairman, Editorial Board, The Nation Newspaper; Grace Oyebo, Head, Document and Information Management, First Bank of Nigeria Plc.; Gbolahan Latona, Head, Legal and Persecutions, EFCC, Lagos zonal office; Abiola Abioye, Lecturer at University of Ibadan; Commissioner of Police, Lagos State represented by Tunji Yusuf, Commandant, RRS. The pleanary session is headed by Proffesor Ayodele Olukoju.
The discussants enlightened the populace on the importance of archiving materials, while Oyebo implored the Director General of LASRAB, Abiodun Onayele to present a Blue Print and match words with actions.
