International Day of Older Persons: Midwifery college celebrates senior citizens
General News
DR Khadijat Musah, the Chairman, West African Postgraduate College of Nurses and Midwives (WAPCNM), Oyo/Osun branch says older persons contribute a lot to the development of the country.
Musah made this known in a statement in Ilorin on Thursday, as the country is preparing to mark the International Day of Older Persons.
She said senior citizens were integral part of the nation, who at one point or another contributed to the development of the country.
The United Nations General Assembly designated Oct. 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.
According to her, in 2002 the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century.
“This is also to promote the development of a society for all ages,’’ she said.
Musah said that the members of the Postgraduate College would celebrate the nation’s aged citizens by giving back and ensuring their comforts.
She said the college would mark the day with the theme: “The Resilience and Contribution of Older Women”.
She said that experts from the Post Graduate College would embark on excursion to Ilaji Resort, Ibadan; visitation and presentation of food items to Senior Citizens Palace, Akobo in Ibadan.
She said other activities include presentation of medical consumables at the Chief Anenih Geriatric Centre in University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan among others.
Musah said that Mr Francis Popoola, the Secretary of the WAPCNM, South West Zone would also deliver a keynote address at the event. (NAN)
