SOME Abuja residents on Friday advised Nigerians to imbibe tea-drinking habits as the world celebrates Tea Day.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the residents said that “drinking tea boosts the immune system and enhances good health”.

NAN reports that the day is celebrated all over the world to draw light on the impact that the tea trade has brought to workers and farmers.

The UN General Assembly declared May 21, as the International Tea Day, seeing the progress Asian countries were making in the World Tea Industry.

Mr Ali Baba Inuwa, a journalist, said that tea drinking had numerous benefits, therefore urging people to imbibe drinking tea habit to stay healthy and shun alcohol.

According to him, tea is packed with nutrients that you don’t get in many other beverages, especially coffee.

“Tea contains a variety of phytochemicals and phytonutrients since they are coming from different types of plants to help one stay alive and healthy,’’ he said.

Mr Samuel John, a civil servant, said that tea was good since it helped to prevent hunger.

“Tea is one food that I take daily. I see tea as my food because it helps to prevent hunger.

“I am not complete if I don’t take tea in a day. That is what makes my day complete,’’ he said.

Mrs Grace Jonah, a retiree with the Central Bank of Nigeria, said that tea was a necessity in every home.

“It is what most women used for their babies when they want to stop breastfeeding.

“It is very essential because it will keep the children healthy and not feeling the impact that the mother has stop breastfeeding.

“It also helps the breastfeeding mothers to stay healthy. It comes in handy when food is not ready. For me, tea is what keeps me going,’’ she said.

NAN reports that studies have shown that a variety of teas may boost your immune system, fight off inflammation, and even ward off cancer and heart disease.

While some brews provide more health advantages than others, there’s plenty of evidence that regularly drinking tea could have a lasting impact on your wellness.

A registered dietitian, Amanda Sevilla, said that drinking tea was perfectly OK, adding that it had many useful benefits for overall health.

The oldest and longest-living populations in the world drink tea on a daily basis.

“The Okinawans in Okinawa, Japan drink green tea or matcha every single day,” Sevilla pointed out.

The National Library of Medicine, reports that phytonutrients are common plant nutrients that produce certain biological activity and support human health in many different ways.

Some ways that the phytonutrients found in teas can benefit our health include antioxidants, fighting certain allergies, lowering the risk of some cancers, and supporting the anti-aging process.(NAN)
