GERMAN Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, on Thursday, spoke out in favour of holding talks with Iran about its missile programme and the role the Islamic Republic plays in the Libyan, Syrian, and Iraqi conflicts.

Maas said in Berlin after meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi. that Iran must change its behaviour in the region.

“We are not naive when it comes to Iran and we know that Iran plays a dangerous role in the region,” Maas said.

The U.S. withdrew in 2018 from an international agreement aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Washington accuses Tehran of meddling in regional affairs and has re-imposed sanctions on Iran under its “maximum pressure” campaign to get the country to change its behaviour.

Germany, France and Britain are nonetheless determined to stick to the 2015 nuclear deal and exert influence within that framework.

The issue has come up at the UN Security Council, where the U.S. is agitating to have UN sanctions re-imposed on Iran.

Israel supports the U.S. course and sees Iran as a threat to its very existence. (dpa/NAN)
