NIGERIAN Journalists have been advised to ensure that they practise investigative and objective journalism to guard against misinformation and unethical reportage.
The National Coordinator, Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, on Tuesday in Ilorin gave the advice at the ongoing Ramadan Lecture Series organised by Islamic Missionaries Association of Nigeria.
The Ramadan Lecture was entitled: “Objective Media Reporting : A Solution to Religious and Political Instability.’’
Abdullahi bemoaned the prevalence of fake news on social and traditional media which he said contributed to some of the current problems plaguing the nation.
He urged media practitioners to strictly adhere to the ethics guiding the profession to ensure professionalism.
Abdullahi, who is a human resources consultant, however, commended the media for educating and informing the populace on various issues in the society.
Also speaking, the Editor of the Herald on Sunday, Mr Jubril Issa, identified ownership pattern and control as factors affecting the performance of Nigerian Media.
He called for the independence of the media to ensure effective service delivery.
Issa also advised media owners to improve the welfare of their personnel to guarantee productivity.
The immediate past General Manager of NTA, Ilorin, Mallam Ibrahim Majeed, expressed worry over the influx of untrained and quack journalists in the profession, calling for a redress of the situation.
Also contributing, a former Grand Khadi in the state, Justice Salihu Olohuntoyin-Muhammad, said the role of journalists must not be underestimated due to their roles in nation building.
He also advised practitioners to always be thorough in carrying out their duties.
