A collaborative survey by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has shown that 925 trades are difficult to fill in the labour market.

The survey tagged: “National Skills Gap Assessment’’ revealed that the study was carried out in six priority sectors, namely Agri-business and agro allied, Metal and Solid minerals,

According to Ari, the breakdown of the survey showed that 19.7 per cent vacancies are in the housing sector, 13.9 per cent in petro-chemical sector and 14.7 per cent in other goods.

Others he said are 11.4 per cent in the auto industry, 10.3 per cent in textiles, 10.1 per cent in steel, 8.9 per cent in the service sector and 3.3 per cent in the leather industry.

Ari added that the report noted that 15.7 per cent of all hard to fill vacancies were due to lack of technical skills, while 11.8 per cent were due to lack of basic IT skills.

He said the report also noted that 9.2 per cent were due to lack of advanced IT skills, while between 9.2 per cent and 7.5 per cent of the vacancies were due to lack of requisite soft skills.

ITF is a Federal Government agency with the mandate of promoting and encouraging acquisition of skills with a view to generating a pool of indigenous manpower sufficient to meet the needs of the economy. (NAN)
