THE International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has appointed the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, as a member of Digital Innovation Board.

The Minister’s aide on Media and Communications, Mr Isime Esene, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Isime said the board would provide strategic guidance, expertise and advocacy regarding its mission of building critical local enablers.

According to him, it will also foster innovation and entrepreneurship in digital development to create a more inclusive and equitable digital future for all.

In his remarks, the minister expressed delight over his appointment into the Digital Innovation Board of the ITU, saying that the appointment would offer him an opportunity to work with other notable leaders from across the world.

“This is with a view to deepening Nigeria’s impact and shaping the future of digital innovation,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Cosmas Zavazava, Director, Telecommunication Development Bureau, ITU, lauded Tijani’s appointment, saying it would accelerate implementation of the Kigali Action Plan under the mandate of ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) and empower stakeholders.

“I am confident that with the guidance of the board, we will accelerate the implementation of the Kigali Action Plan under the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) and empower stakeholders.

“As innovation and entrepreneurship was adopted by all the regions as a Regional Initiative, I look forward to accelerating digital transformation through the work of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance for Digital Development.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tijani and 17 other eminent individuals have been nominated and emerged as members of the board following their track records in innovation.

ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies. It is committed to connecting all the world’s people – wherever they live and whatever their means. (NAN)
