Jakande was father of Journalism in Nigeria – Osoba

A former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, has described late Lateef Jakande , who was the first civilian governor of Lagos State, as the father of Journalism.

Osoba made the remark while delivering his speech as a guest at the inaugural Annual Memorial lecture, in Honour of Lateef Jakande, on Monday, August 7, 2023 in Lagos.

The Lecture, themed ‘The Man, His Journalism, His Politics’, had in attendance, His excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who was ably represented by his deputy, Femi Hamzat, as Special Guest of Honour, General Ike Nwachukwu, who was former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Governor of Imo State.

Other dignitaries also in attendance, were Prince Sam Amuka a thorough-bred Journalist, Otunba Femi Ogunsanwo, Dayo Duyile, Lade Bonuola, Lanre Idowu and Richard Akinnola, amongst others.

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, Eze Anaba, said that Lateef Jakande was an Icon of Journalism and the political landscape.   

In his speech, Dayo Duyile, said that Jakande was a master planner and meticulous in his work as a Journalist, even as the governor of Lagos State.

Jakande, who died on February 11, 2021, was in his hey days involved in the formation of Nigerian Guild of Editors, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Nigerian Union of Journalist, and the International Press Institute, IPI.
