JAPANESE Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday agreed to work together to send a ‘powerful message’ to North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes.
“I will closely cooperate with Mr Mahathir to send out a powerful message to North Korea,’’ Abe told a joint news conference following their meeting in Tokyo.
The two leaders’ talks came the same day U.S. President Donald Trump held a historic summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore, marking the first time a sitting U.S. president has met a North Korean leader.
“I hope the United States and North Korea “accept the fact that, in negotiations, both sides must be prepared to give in certain issues if they expect to reach a good conclusion,’’ Mahathir, who took office in May, said.
According to him, expecting only one side to give in will not result in a very positive conclusion.
Abe also said he hopes the U.S.-North Korea summit will be successful.
“North Korea has rich natural resources and a diligent workforce.
“It will have a bright future if it treads the right path,’’ Abe added.
