The Jigawa State Government has directed all cattle breeders in the state to take their cows suffering from foot and mouth disease to the nearest veterinary clinics, for medical attention.

The Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Alhaji Kabiru Ali, gave the directive through the ministry’s spokesman, Malam Zubairu Sulaiman, in Dutse on Tuesday.

Ali said the directive followed reports confirming the outbreak of foot and mouth disease, otherwise called “Bauru’’ in Hausa, in five local government areas of the state.

He listed the LGAs as Birniwa, Kafinhausa, Malammadori, Kirikasamma and Auyo, noting that the affected cows were dying as a result of the disease.

The commissioner assured the cattle breeders that government has provided veterinary clinics across the state with the appropriate vaccines for the treatment and control of the disease.

According to him, the Director, Veterinary Services in the ministry, explained that the disease could spread if the affected cows drink from the same pond or graze in the same area as the healthy ones.

“The director, therefore, called on cattle rearers, community leaders and self-help groups to mobilise and enlighten community members, to seek medical help,  in order to protect their animals from the infection.

“He also called on staff and heads of veterinary clinics in the state to rededicate themselves to duty, in order to stem the spread of the disease,’’ the commissioner said. (NAN)
