CRIME cases in our dear Country, Nigeria are getting worse day by day.

Available records tend to confirm that hardly a day passes without stories of killing of one or more person’s. No part of this Country is now considered  SAFE by any imagination whether one is at one’s  home or on the road. Only God knows how many families go to bed these days and sleep with their two eyes closed.

Indeed, concerned Nigerians, join the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi  Fubara and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission/ former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase ( CFR ) in mourning the unfortunate sudden death of Divisional Police Officer, the late Superintendent of Police Bako Angbashim who until his death, was in charge of  Ahoada Area of the Rivers State Police Command.

DPO Angbashim ,was said to have been ambushed together with some of his men on duty.  But while his men ran out of bullets, they withdrew and escaped.  Their Boss, Angbashim continued but unfortunately fell into the wicked hands of his assailants. According to reports, they did not only murder him but also beheaded him and removed his manhood in addition.  The assassin’s are suspected to be a ” gang of Cultists” said to be ” operating in the Odiemudie Area of Ahoada East Local Government ” in the Rivers State.

Meanwhile,Gov. Fubara who described the slain DPO as  ” fine, brave and dutiful Police Officer” is also reported to have made a huge financial commitment of #100 Million as bounty for anybody who gives information leading to the arrest of the murders of DPO Angbashim.

Unfortunately, the state of our Country,Nigeria these days is alarming, unpredictable and very disturbing.

As at last year,2022, a total of 39 Roman Catholic Priests were reported to have been killed by unknown gunmen while another group of 30 Priests were abducted for ransom etc. North East is said to have the highest number of 12 while the North West recorded.

To fish out the murderers of late DPO Angbashim should now be seen as a Big Challenge,an affront,a litmus Test for our Intelligence and Security personnel everywhere, more so as it concerns a Big Officer of their own.  All eyes and ears are also now focused on them as was recently the case with the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal ( PEPT ,).  Nigerians are hoping that this one would not go the same way of a renowned  Journalist,Dele Giwa…one- time Senior Columnist in the then famous Sunday Times Newspaper and founder/ Managing Editor of the former News Watch Magazine.  He was assassinated through a Letter Bomb sent to him in his Office in the eighties during one of the  Military Regimes.

Similarly,Nigerians cannot forget too soon how a former High Court Judge, Justice Bola Ige and a well known Politician, Alfred Rewane were murdered in their cold blood in their homes. But till today, their killers are yet to be fingered.

However, the only possible solution to our present predicaments of insurgencies resulting to wastages of innocent human lives is to have good governance.

Our federal and State governments should concentrate more on providing employment opportunities for our teeming Youths, especially the School Leavers among them.  Let there be Industries in the States to scale down Youths restiveness.  If our Youths are gainfully employed, they would not have time to engage in crimes.  Further more, government should control the  illegal circulation of fire arms in the Country while our Politicians should hence STOP engaging our Youths as ” Political Thugs ” during their electioneering Campaigns and elections. Who knows whose turn it would be next ?

May God help Nigeria.
