Johnson & Johnson files for vaccine approval in Japan

U.S. pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson announced that its Janssen Pharmaceutical K.K. unit has filed for approval of its COVID-19 vaccine with Japan’s Health Ministry.

This was in the latest development of Coronavirus on Monday in the Asia-Pacific,

Janssen Pharmaceutical K.K. said that according to the results of a clinical trial held in Japan, its one-shot vaccine was safe to use.

Japan has opened large-scale vaccination centers in Tokyo and Osaka with state-backed facilities aimed at speeding up the country’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

During the day, India’s COVID-19 death toll crossed the 300,000 marks, reaching 303,720 on Monday, confirmed the federal health ministry.

As many as 4,454 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, the highest so far in the country.

Meanwhile, the country’s overall COVID-19 cases rose to 26,752,447, with 222,315 new cases registered since Sunday morning.

Thailand reported 2,713 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the national tally to 132,213.

The country’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) also reported 30 more deaths, taking the toll to 806.

Fiji confirmed eight more positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday night, bringing the tally to 238 in the Pacific island nation.

The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,973 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,184,706.

The death toll climbed to 19,983 after 39 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

Cambodia reported a daily record of 556 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the national case tally to 25,761 so far, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), the country’s Central Bank, urged customers and retailers to make use of e-wallets and apps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, in the Maldives, four suspects who were arrested in connection with the attack on Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed have tested positive for COVID-19, local media reported citing Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

During the day, Pakistan confirmed 3,060 new cases of COVID-19 and 57 deaths during the last 24 hours, said the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

The total number of confirmed cases reached 903,599, including 820,374 recoveries and 62,917 active cases across the country.

Vietnam reported 58 new COVID-19 cases from 6:00 p.m.local time Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, including 56 locally transmitted and two imported, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 5,275, according to its Ministry of Health.

New Zealand reported four new cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation and no new cases in the community.

All the four newly imported cases came from India and have remained in managed isolation and quarantine facilities in Auckland, according to the Ministry of Health.

South Korea reported 538 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 136,467.

The daily caseload was down from 585 the previous day, staying below 600 for two days due to fewer virus tests over the weekend.

The daily average caseload for the past week was 597. (dpa/NAN)
