President Goodluck Jonathan is to lead a 33-member Commonwealth observer mission to monitor general elections holding in Tanzania on October 25. Yahya Simba, acting permanent secretary of Tanzania’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, told a news conference in Dar es Salaam, capital of Tanzania, that the mission would be made up of observers from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific.

At a meeting jointly organised by the United Nations, UN, and the government of Tanzania to herald activities to mark the 70th anniversary of UN later this week, Simba stated that while Jonathan would lead the Commonwealth observer team, former Mozambican President, Armando Guebuza would lead the African Union, AU, observer team.

More than 23 million out of a population of about 46 million Tanzanians will elect a new president, members of parliament and councillors on the election day. The presidential candidate for the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, John Magufuli, is facing fierce competition from Edward Lowassa, leader of the main opposition party, CHADEMA.

The winner of the presidential poll will succeed incumbent President Jakaya Kikwete who is completing his second five-year term.
