GOV. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Monday in Ibadan described journalists as key instruments for sustainability of good governance in Nigeria
The governor, while declaring open the 2023 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State Council, said this was why the media’s role in nation-building cannot be over-emphasised.
Makinde, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, said journalists as the society’s watchdog keep leaders on their toes for the benefit of the nation.
He added that the week’s theme, “Reimaging Education System for the Fifth Industrial Revolution”, could not have come at a better time.
“Our education system in Nigeria needs revamping to a position our country can enjoy the benefits of the incoming Fifth Revolution.
“As you know, Education is one of the four pillars of our administration’s Roadmap for Sustainable Development 2023 to 2027, just as it was in our Roadmap for Accelerated Development 2019 to 2023.
“We have taken big steps to ensure Oyo State reclaims its pride of place in education.
“Just a few weeks ago, the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) was reaffirmed as the best state-owned university in Nigeria for the fourth time running since we took sole ownership of the institution.
“So, I want to assure you that we shall pay attention to the deliberations of the Press Week to see what we can learn to further improve our education sector,” Makinde said.
Speaking also, the State NUJ Council Chairman, Demola Babalola, said the Press Week seeks to create a platform for journalists.
”It is for journalists to deliberate on emerging issues affecting the media, the industry, the economy and the polity,” Babalola added.
He said the Press Week was an opportunity for journalists to learn from experts in various fields, network and share experiences with their colleagues across the country.
“As journalists, we have critical roles to play in shaping the society.
“Our duty goes beyond informing, educating and entertaining. We must hold those in power accountable, expose corruption and ensure that the society is better for all,” Babalola said.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the event featured lecture, recognitions and presentation of awards to dignitaries for their contributions to growth and development of media in the state.(NAN)
