Journalists rate #NLNGCHANGEYOURSTORY 2023 high for its digital skills content

After three days of intensive digital training on #NLNGCHANGEYOURSTORY 2023, sponsored by the NLNG Ltd, the journalists have every reason to echo the takeaway from the workshop that “No journalist has an excuse not to tell stories through shot videos and photos beautiful enough to adorn their social media handles.”

MORE than 20 journalists drawn from both the traditional and online media, who attended the three-day workshop sponsored by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, in Lagos in June have rated highly the training programme, which they said enhanced their digital communication and social media skills.

The training prgramme with the theme #NLNGChangeYourStory,” was one of the annual capacity building workshops, which began in 2015 with the collaboration of Taiwo Obe’s Journalism Clinic, a renowned institution in the field of communication. According to the participants, the journalism clinic has risen to become one capacity building workshop that every journalist in Nigeria should aspire to attend. 

They also applauded NLNG’s vision of equipping journalists with the necessary tools and skills to navigate the ever-changing landscape with the traditional media organisations and social media as the major focus of the programme.

For the participating journalists, the three-day workshop was largely intensive with instructions on digital reporting handled by the most magnanimous trainer, Dan Mason, an Internationally renowned digital media and communications trainer and consultant for charities, NGOs and corporate clients.

According to the officials of the NLNG Ltd, this year’s #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop was aimed at enhancing the digital communication and social media skills of Journalists.

“No journalist has an excuse not to tell stories through shot videos and photos beautiful enough to adorn their social media handles” was one of the key introductory phrases used at the workshop.

And to demonstrate its determination to ensure that the goal of the workshop was achieved, the NLNG made sure that the participants were not only taught the theoretical aspect of the training but it also provided the required tools and gadgets to every participants, including mobile phones for practical demonstration of the new digital skills.

The highly elated journalists expressed their impressions of the workshop after being taught by the professionals and exposed to their wealth of knowledge and experience in the intricacies of digital communication, social media reporting and photography.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the workshop, the journalists expressed their appreciation to the NLNG, the team facilitators, including Dan Mason and Taiwo Obe for providing them with the opportunity to learn new digital skills that will enable them to remain relevant in the field of journalism.

While some journalists couldn’t hold back their excitement at the new digital applications that they were exposed to, others believed that their stories would indeed change for good, especially with the prospects of monetizing their photos and video storytelling skills.

In his remarks at the closing ceremony, Andy Odeh, general manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development of NLNG, said that the initiative was borne out of the recognition of the significance of embracing new technologies and platforms to effectively convey stories that resonate with the Nigerian populace in today’s fast-paced digital age.

Odeh also stated that the driving force behind the workshop was the company’s belief that the stakeholders “are not just partners in success but are also an integral part of NLNG’s journey towards greater heights”.

“At Nigeria LNG, we understand that our growth and success are intricately linked to the growth and success of those around us. We aim to create a symbiotic relationship where both parties thrive together.  

“Recognising the pivotal role journalists play in shaping narratives and influencing public opinion, NLNG sought to empower them by providing the necessary skills to change their own stories and, consequently, shape the nation’s stories. 

“The first #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop was held in 2015, after which there was a hiatus. The annual workshop resumed in 2021 and since then, over 70 journalists have been trained, reinforcing their digital communication and social media competencies,” he said.

According to Odeh, the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop has undoubtedly contributed to empowering journalists, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving digital era.

“NLNG’s dedication to capacity building remains steadfast, reinforcing its commitment to the growth and success of its stakeholders and the nation,” Odeh added.
