MEMBERS of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, have suspended their boycott of the State Government activities, which lasted for a month.
This is contained in a statement issued to newsmen in Sokoto on Friday by the Chairman and Secretary of the chapel, Messrs Habibu Harisu and Ankeli Emmanuel.
“This is to bring to the notice of the general public that the Correspondents Chapel of NUJ, Sokoto State Council, have resolved to discontinue its boycott of the state government activities as earlier announced.
“The decision was reached sequel to series of meetings and consultations involving delegated members as well as executives of the Chapel with the leadership of the State NUJ and managers of information of the State Government where complaints of the Chapel were frontally addressed.
“These meetings, which were chaired by the State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Isah Galadanci, reviewed the sad incident that occurred between the members of the Correspondents’ Chapel and security operatives.
“Resulting from the meetings, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel and the representatives of the State Government have agreed to work towards a more harmonious relationship in the service of the public, who are the target of their mandates,” the statement read in part.
It recalled the Chapel’s position to shun any press statement from individuals, groups, politicians or institutions who do not deem it fit to invite the members to their functions.
The chapel, however, reiterated its call on heads of security agencies in the state to sensitize their personnel on Media/Security relationship.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Correspondents Chapel on Feb. 13, took the decision to boycott all activities of the state government.
The decision followed frequent harassment, intimidation, and molestation of their members by security personnel attached to the Sokoto Government House on Feb. 12. (NAN)
