Journalists urge ECOWAS to use New Media to Publicise Its Work on Peace and Security

DAY two session of the ECOWAS workshop on the role of the Media in promoting peace and security in West Africa on Tuesday, June 25, was focused on ECOWAS’ instruments and strategy on preventive diplomacy, mediation of resolution of conflicts, support for credible elections and the deepening democratic governance; and regional peace keeping initiatives.

Remi Ajibewa, director of political affairs, ECOWAS, cited successful examples in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Mali, The Gambia and Guinea Bissau among others, noting the media has a role to play in providing visibility to keep community citizens well involved.

ECOWAS’ role model in peace keeping efforts in Africa was highlighted in the presentation by Ligbi Baba Midjida of the Directorate of Peace keeping and regional security.

The consensus among participants was that ECOWAS could achieve greater successes in this area with the cooperation of member States and other stakeholders, especially the media.

Paul Ejime, workshop facilitator,  reminded the journalists that as the gate keepers of information and agenda setters, they should act as effective interface between ECOWAS and the community citizens in a manner that will engender confidence, ownership and effective participation to enable the organisation deliver on its peace and security mandate.

The session also highlighted the effect of the new media and how this can be used positively as well as best practices in media engagement in in general the promoting peace and security in the ECOWAS region.
